Every year, for the last 30+ years, a master carpenter has taken a group of energetic and ambitious teenagers into a classroom to teach them how to build a home. Under the watchful eye of the carpenter, these students get to apply what they learn in the classroom in a true stick built home. The Valley Career and Technical Center Carpentry Program is led by Mr. Tony Shifflett. Mr. Shifflett has a heart for the kids that much larger than the 1680 sq. ft. home he builds with them.

The process for building this home is the same each year. The floor plan, while it be reversed, remains consistent to help improve quality and efficiency each year. The first step for the school is to present a list of building materials needed to local suppliers. All the lumber used in this home is Grade A #1 lumber. You will notice in the construction photos that the exterior walls are #1 grade 2x6. The roof sheathing is plywood, not OSB board. The focus of this program is to teach the students the importance and value of quality craftsmanship with quality materials.

The build process is tedious. Each step is coached by the master carpenter. The senior students do the most difficult work as the younger students watch, learn, and then participate. The instructor literally works side by side with the class as they watch their future become a reality with the home. The senior graduating class is typically between 5 and 10 young men and women.

Mr. Shifflett, in a recent interview, said his hope is that the students learn everything they can about the carpentry but even more his desire is that they learn about how to work with others and be more than just an average person. He introduces the young students to the profession by building doghouses, garden sheds, storage buildings, and other unique projects. He incorporates complex roof designs and interesting features to challenge their young minds. Working on the home is a badge of honor the students earn as their skill level progresses.

This 2017 home is a reverse plan from the 2016 home. The floor plans are included in the attached files. This home has a 1680 sq. ft. main floor. The kitchen and living room are featured in a very open floor plan concept with a patio door. The 3 bedrooms are spacious and have very nice closet space. There is a utility room with an outside entrance. Washer and dryer hookup are in the utility room. The kitchen has a large pantry that will double as a basement stairway entrance if you decide to set the home on a basement foundation. The floor is designed for easy removal to accommodate the basement steps.

This home will be delivered with finished and primed sheetrock walls, hardwood custom cabinets, hardwood wood flooring in the common areas, padding & carpets (not installed) for the bedrooms, new HVAC system, all electrical and plumbing complete, and more.

The buyer of this home will have a few months to finalize the details before moving the home. Mr. Shifflett has developed relationships with companies that can give you a quote on moving and setting your home. The buyer will need to have a foundation built specifically for this home. Again, we can provide you will qualified individuals who can give you a quote for your foundation. A simple foundation made cost as little as $5,000 while a poured concrete basement with exterior entrance may cost as much as $25,000. The mover will load this home on special trailers using a crane. The crane will place the home exactly, to the inch, where it needs to rest on the foundation. The contractors will then re-marry the two halves of the home. The finished product will look like a stick built ranch home on-site. The moving cost and reconstruction varies depending on your situation. A good ballpark estimate for this phase is $10,000. Previous buyers have reported that the cost of moving and completing the home (foundation, utility hookup, final construction, siding, etc.) totaled between $15,000 and $20,000. Again, we recommend you get exact quotes based on your land.

This home is set to be sold at live auction on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 1 P.M. This home will be sold at the build location, 49 Hornet Rd. Fishersville, VA 22939.
