This is the online bidding portion of the estate auction for World Bird Sanctuary founder Walter Crawford.

The World Bird Sanctuary founder and executive director, Walter C. Crawford Jr., died Friday (July 17, 2015) from complications after routine surgery. He was 70.

“Walter was a much-loved and respected public figure, acknowledged for his pioneering work in the field of raptor conservation and preservation,” board president John Kemper said in a statement.

According to the Sanctuary’s website, Mr. Crawford spent his youth in Venezuela, where the exotic jungle birds caught his attention and led to his career choice. A Vietnam veteran, Mr. Crawford earned a bachelor’s degree from Southeast Missouri State University and a master’s degree from Mississippi State University.

Mr. Crawford got a job at the St. Louis Zoo and in 1977, with support from legendary St. Louis Zoo chief Marlin Perkins; he founded what eventually became the World Bird Sanctuary. He left the zoo in 1982 to operate the sanctuary full-time. The sanctuary operates a park at 125 Bald Eagle Ridge Road in Valley Park that opened in 2000.
