BRAUN & HELMER AUCTION SERVICE, INC.

GEORGE DeANGELIS – A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

For all of his 94 years, George DeAngelis was a man on the move.  A long-time Ford Motor Company employee, he also had a lifelong affection for owning, driving, and appreciating Model “A” Fords.  That affection led him to become editor of the internationally known Model “A” News, a position he held for 23 years.  George’s passion-filled publication became the inspiration for the two books that would follow:  The Model “A” Ford as Henry Built It, and The Early Ford V-8.  Today, these technical production books are the unequivocal authority on car restoration for Ford enthusiasts.  Both books continue to sell very well.  George’s Model “A” book is now in its 5th printing.  He is also remembered for his published works on Ford’s 999 and Arrow race cars.

From the beginning, George was a devoted student of Henry Ford and his automobiles.  Fascinated with Henry’s automotive ingenuity, he set out to build a replica of Ford’s first car, the quadricycle.  He had the perfect background for the task.  He possessed the skills of a tool and die maker, but with the careful eye of the artist.  And, he had a genuine love for antique automobiles to boot.  George eventually built three quadricycles – the first in 1963 to commemorate the centennial of Henry Ford’s birth.  When the car was completed, George took it out to the Ford Proving Grounds to test it and track its speed.  Popular Science was there to interview George and photograph him with the car.  Today that car occupies a place of prominence in Henry Ford Museum’s Driving America exhibit.  In 1991, George was commissioned by Greenfield Village to build a second.  That car is on display in the Bagley Avenue Shop, to be taken out and driven on special occasions and events like the Old Car Festival.  The third, commissioned by Ford Motor Company, now graces the lobby of their World Headquarters in Dearborn.  No blueprints ever existed of the quadricycle, so George created his own, using the original car as the pattern.  The historic car sat in an enclosed display case, so George estimated his initial measurements through the glass.  Amazingly, when the car was removed for confirmation, George found he had made only one error – of 5/8 of an inch.  He was able to source some of his parts from lawn mower catalogs, and some from antique shops, but most he made himself, expertly turned on his own lathe.  George’s plans are still available for sale, and have made their way to quadricycle enthusiasts around the world.

George bought the historic Greenock Mills in 1978.  Built by William W. Dean in 1840, Greenock Mills served the Rushton community as a grist mill, saw mill, cider mill, post office and railroad stop.  A devastating fire destroyed the upper two floors in 1971, while George was negotiating the sale.   The DeAngelis family rebuilt the mill utilizing much of the original material.  Greenock Mills eventually became a successful, sought-after cider mill, offering cider and donuts, and artisan-made bread and pies.

George built his home across the street from the Mill, matching its Greek Revival architecture, overlooking the dam and mill race.  He planted Hickory, Walnut, Dogwood, Sugar Maple, Sassafrass, Paw Paw and distinctive evergreen trees to line his property.  He also put in several varieties of apple trees.  He built duck houses and hung bluebird houses around the property, and even added a salt lick for the deer that would frequent his yard.    The property eventually became a Certified Natural Habitat.

George was a naturalist at heart.  He and his wife, Sidonia, raised, tagged and tracked the migration of Monarch butterflies for years.  They collected and cared for the eggs they found on milkweed plants that grew naturally in their yard.  A couple of their butterflies, they were informed, made it all the way to Mexico.

George was also a longstanding member of the Huron River Watershed and volunteered many hours to their cause.  He was a member of the Green Oak Township Historical Society and served on the Planning Commission for Green Oak Township as well.  After retirement from Ford Motor Company, George volunteered his time to the Henry Ford Museum several times a month – for years.

George collected and restored many antique automobiles throughout his life, including a prize-winning 1911 Model “T”, and a rare 1936 HAL dirt track racer.  Because of his incredible knowledge of antique cars in general and Model “A” Fords in particular, he was sought after for direction and guidance by Ford fans around the globe.

George was also an early engine enthusiast.  As a member of The Early Engine Club, George took several of his stationary engines to Greenfield Village for early engine meets and used them to run his buzz saw and cut wood as part of the event.

In 1990, Ford Motor Company commissioned George to design a commemorative medallion celebrating the 75th anniversary of the automobile.  It was distributed nationally.

After a lifetime of commercial art, water color became his favorite medium. "I want to paint the scenery we see all around us before it disappears" he would say.  His paintings won awards at juried art shows, and some toured with the Michigan Watercolor Society.  We will have a few to sell at the auction.
