Caleb Helmer's Story

Dr. Ian Jackson, many other doctors and medical professionals at Providence Hospital saved our son’s life. Our twins, Luke and Caleb were born four weeks premature. When they were born, we were told Caleb’s forehead appeared to have an aesthetic deformity. The thought was they would watch and observe for a few days to see if it would change. It did not. He was diagnosed with metopic Craniosynostosis. This is a condition that can be corrected with cranial facial plastic surgery. Caleb’s growth plates on his forehead were fused together which did not allow for appropriate growth and brain development. At nine months old, Caleb endured hours of intense reconstructive surgery. Months after the surgery, complications arose. His first surgeon did not understand the issue. A good friend referred us to, “the best pediatric cranial facial
plastic surgeon,” Dr. Ian Jackson. He immediately acknowledged there was a major problem. Exploratory surgery soon after our first consultation defined the issue. Caleb’s face was riddled with infection-the worst he and the staff had ever seen in a child. In fact, the belief was that there was no medical reason why he was alive with that amount of infection in his body. After manually removing nineteen pockets of infection from Caleb’s mandible line up and over
his head to the other mandible line, Dr. Jackson used innovative techniques to further “clean out” the infected tissue. He and the medical professionals of Providence also prescribed a very aggressive antibiotic treatment program that while physically difficult for our son to endure and absolutely grueling to administer, it worked. Caleb is with us today because of the expertise, quick action and lifesaving treatment he received at Providence Hospital. All of the medical staff prioritized Caleb’s treatment and follow-up in a way we had not experienced in any other medical
environment. The staff knew how to medical diagnose and treat Caleb, they knew when he needed what and administered it, they saved his life. We are eternally grateful to Providence Hospital.

With deep appreciation

David and Jennifer Helmer

More about the Auctioneers Making a Difference Program:

The MSAA Board of Directors has chosen Providence Hospital’s Pediatric Inpatient Unit in Novi as the MSAA’s chosen charity for the Auctioneers Making a Difference program in 2011.

St. John's 40-bed Pediatric unit provides comprehensive care for sick infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. A multi-disciplinary team of board certified pediatricians and specialists, pediatric nurses, pharmacists, and nutritionists direct the care. Two Child-Life Specialists, who are certified teachers and counselors, help the patients keep up with their homework, enjoy playtime, and generally ease the stress and isolation that can result from a hospital stay. The inpatient unit has a playroom, library, a large collection of toys and video games, and state-of-the-art computers for both the structured and unstructured activities. The unit was recently redesigned to maintain as home-like an atmosphere as possible, with bright colors in a nautical theme, lively artwork, and specially decorated patient rooms.
