Bocce set for May 18 at Palazzo di Bocce

Braun and Helmer Services

Allen Park, Mich. - The Detroit Lions have announced the dates for its two spring fundraisers for Detroit Lions Charities (DLC), the Lions' philanthropic foundation.  The seventh annual Detroit Lions' Tony Filippis Memorial Bocce Tournament will be held on Tuesday, May 18, hosted by Palazzo di Bocce in Orion Township, Mich.  The 20th annual Detroit Lions (golf) Invitational will be held on Tuesday, June 8, at TPC Michigan in Dearborn.

The bocce and golf outings are two of the Lions' three major fundraisers that have helped DLC donate nearly $5.6 million to charity since 1991.  The third fundraiser, the Lions' Kickoff Luncheon, will be held late in the summer on a date to be announced later.  All three events are open to the public.

Lions' Head Coach Jim Schwartz will be a chairman for both spring fundraisers and will be joined at the events by many of his Lions' players and staff as well as former Lions' players.  Each event also offers the opportunity to bid on unique items through auctions.

Proceeds from the bocce tournament will go to DLC to benefit the Athletes with Disabilities Network and various other charities in Michigan.  The tournament is named in honor of the late Tony Filippis, long-time advocate for the disabled community who died at age 91 in 2007.

This year's tournament will be led by Coach Schwartz and other chairmen Tony Battaglia, AJ Filippis and former Lions' lineman Mike Utley, and is designed as a fun event for persons of all bocce skill levels at the nation's finest indoor bocce facility.
