Title:  9 Fine Framed Lithographs by David Roberts

Auctioneers Note: This merchandise is all the property of a downsizing consignor, a passionate collector, and represents selected items being liquidated directly from the premises in which it has have been kept since acquisition.  Nowhere will you find merchandise more “fresh to the market”.  These items have been in their exclusive possession for decades.

About David Roberts RA: (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1839). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.

Travel to Egypt and Holy Land:
Roberts set sail for Egypt on 31 August 1838. His intent was to produce drawings that he could later use as the basis for the paintings and lithographs to sell to the public. Egypt was much in vogue at that time and travelers, collectors and lovers of antiquities were keen to buy works inspired by the East or depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt.

Roberts made a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout, he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolor sketches. Roberts was the first British painter to make an artistic expedition to Egypt and the Holy Land. The result of his travels was a picturesque vision of the Near East that has been hugely influential ever since.  Over 170 years later, his work is held in institutions such as the Library of Congress in Washington and London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

He returned to England in July of 1839.  The publications of his Middle Eastern lithographic works started in 1842.  Over 300 lithographs were involved and were reproduced by Louis Haghe from Roberts sketches.  Louis Haghe, a Belgium, was considered ‘sympathetique’ in the reproduction process.  Roberts and Haghe worked closely together in the hand coloring process.  You will note that L. Haghe is printed in script as “lith” (Lithographer) and F. G. Moon, Publisher.  Robert’s sketches with the transformational genius of Haghe represent many of the best lithographs ever produced, especially the views of Egyptian Temples and Monuments.
The lithos have an accuracy with a wonderful soft style in form and coloration.

About the Lithographs: All are set in high quality matched wood frames 13/16” in width.  Exterior black, stepped to gold, stepped down to silver.  Field matt light tan (greige on Cairo Series) - edged gold, second matt white.  Clear plexiglassed faced.  Please note that these lithographs are hand colored and hand pressed and were selected from a group for their quality.  There are expected variances in color application within the same series.  The light tan minimal markings on borders are color over marks or are imperfections in the plates and or printing process, not foxing.
