Who sells animals at the livestock show & sale?

Harrison County 4-H and FFA members with livestock projects have hands-on experience and acquire an understanding of market animal production by preparing for, purchasing, caring for, and keeping records on the animal. They gain a better understanding of the business aspects and economics of purchasing animals, feeds, facilities, and equipment. These young people learn entrepreneurial skills and become advocates of animal agriculture.



Why should I purchase an animal at the Harrison County 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale?


-Members select high quality animals for their project and maintain that quality until it reaches the finished product.  

- As a buyer, you will have control of how your meat is processed, cut and wrapped.  

- By purchasing you will show pride and support to the local community and its youth.  

- Buyers receive publicity for yourself and/or your business.  

- You, as a buyer, have the opportunity to know the person who raised the animal, where it came from and that it was grown locally.  

- The cost is worth it when you consider the safety issues and benefits to the local economy

- Thinking of purchasing an animal for meat from the 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction at the Harrison County Livestock Show? Here’s what you can expect from your market steer or market goat. 



Market Steers: The amount of meat you take home depends on how heavily muscled and how fat the steer is and whether you have more boneless cuts. Heavier muscled leaner steers will put more beef in your freezer while fatter, lighter muscled steers will put less meat in your freezer. For the average 1,200 lbs. steer that you have cut into a mixture of bone-in and boneless cuts, you can expect to put about 43% of the steer’s live weight in your freezer. For example, if a steer weighs 1,200 lbs. at the show, you could expect to have about 

516 lbs. of meat for your freezer (1,200 lbs. x 43%). The total value of the beef would be over $3,000. 

Market goats: at the Harrison County Livestock Sale will range in weight from 60 to 100 pounds. For the average 80-pound goat, you can expect to have about 40 pounds of meat in your freezer. The total value of the goat would be over $350. 

We will work with you to transport your market animal purchase to the processing facility. We have appointments for all the market animals in the sale immediately following the sale. Payment for processing is the buyer’s responsibility.
