9-11 a.m. on Auction Days

We have been working hard to assemble another barnburner of a summer sale, and our 2019 Summer Auction Weekend inventory is chock full of important fine art and amazing rarities. Now an annual Thomaston Place August sale tradition, the catalog will include an extensive selection of Maine artwork – an opportunity to display the talent of our local artisans and the beauty of our State to prospective bidders worldwide.

On Friday, August 23, the focus will be on Maine art, folk art and country furniture. There will be works by Andrew Wyeth, John Marin, Dahlov Ipcar, Mark Wethli, William Thon, Judd Hartmann, Waldo Peirce, Ron Frontin, Eric Hopkins and many other Maine notables.  This day will also include an outstanding folk art selection – including 13 weathervanes, led by a gilded copper Indian chief vane, probably by J.L. Mott; many decoys, including six lots of miniatures by Massachusetts master carver Elmer Crowell; and country furniture, such as a painted 48-drawer apothecary cabinet, a 19th Century Maine chair table in original paint, and a Pennsylvania Dutch painted hope chest dated 1774.

On Saturday, August 24, the auction will feature early paintings, marine art, important firefighter memorabilia, and fine antiques.  There will be artwork by Jasper Francis Cropsey, John Frederick Kensett, Otto Summer, Winslow Homer, Edward Borein, and Frederick Childe Hassam; plus, ship paintings by John Stobart, Armin Carl Hansen, Montague Dawson, and SFM Badger. The Saturday auction will sizzle with an important 37-lot selection of firefighter memorabilia, led by an outstanding 1851 Boston painted leather fireman’s presentation parade helmet surmounted by a reclining greyhound dog, a pair of 19th Century painted fire pumper parade panels, early leather buckets, fire fighter paintings and prints, hose nozzles, and other items. A finely woven circa 150 AD Peruvian Nazca ceremonial mantle in rich, vibrant colors will be presented, along with over 110 lots of finely crafted Asian art and antiquities plus a group of ancient and medieval artifacts. The antique furniture collection will include an important pair of matched Federal period card tables, a NH Sheraton sideboard in rampant tiger maple, and a 14th Century French Gothic sacristy cabinet. Finally, the Saturday sale will offer marine items, firearms and cannons, antique clocks, carpets, and early silver.

On Sunday, August 25, the focus will be on 20th Century decorative arts, with featured artwork by Henri Laurens, Jean Dufy, Maurice Utrillo, Josep Roca-Sastre, Anne Estelle Rice, Charles Woodbury, and Harriet Goodhue Hosmer.  On this day, we will present a rare Tiffany lady’s boudoir desk with inset Favrile glass scarabs, along with a Tiffany Studios bronze and Favrile glass lily desk lamp and a selection of Tiffany Favrile vases and bowls. A Brunswick Monarch rosewood inlaid pool table will be offered, along with a selection of Eldred Wheeler custom crafted furniture, plus two lots of leather and chrome Barcelona chairs.  Sunday will include over 80 lots of estate jewelry and watches, including a ring set with a 1.80 carat natural fancy intense yellow diamond, a graduated natural saltwater pearl necklace with GIA report, and 15 fine watches; plus 15 silver lots, with 5 sterling flatware sets and 2 compotes by Georg Jensen.  Finally, we will offer seven motorized vehicles, led by a 2012 Harley Davidson FL 103 motorcycle and 2005 Jaguar convertible, and a 19th Century Penny Farthing form high wheel bicycle.

Comfortable seating and delicious catering await you in our auction hall.  Please call ahead (1-207-354-8141) to ensure a reserved seat.  If you are unable to attend, it would be our pleasure to take your bid by phone, absentee or internet via ThomastonLive, LiveAuctioneers, or Invaluable.  Visit our website at www.thomastonauction.com for full details and a complete virtual catalog.  Buyer’s Premium is 17% (20% for online bidders). Please call our courteous and knowledgeable staff if you have any questions.
